Membership Application
Peninsula Community Chapel, Yorktown, VA
Dear Prospective Member,
The Bible describes the church using a lot of different imagery. The church is described as being like a family, a flock, a temple, a body, and many other things. All of these images help to convey the vital importance of the local church. The local church is important because when God saves us, he doesn't just save us to himself but he also saves us to one another. He knits his redeemed people together as brothers and sisters in a family and as branches on a vine. And so, even though we may not see the phrase "church membership" mentioned in the Bible, the idea of God's people being bound together as a spiritual community is clearly present from Genesis through Revelation.
In contrast to all of this, our culture has a tendency to view the church from a consumer mindset. Such thinking can lead us to treat the local church as nothing more than a social club or a service provider, when it is really a supernatural community bound together by Jesus. As the local church, it is our job to work together as a spiritual family to spur one on in our faith and to be a light to the world in both our gathered and scattered worship.
For these reasons, if you have trusted in Jesus as your Savior and Lord and you've been around PCC for a little while (at least 2-3 months) and would like to make it your church home, I would encourage you to prayerfully consider pursuing church membership. Why do we encourage the 2-3 months? We want you to be around long enough to see some of our wrinkles and imperfections before you make the commitment of membership so that you can make an informed decision about the church body you're committing to. If you would like to join, the steps are:
1. Carefully read our Constitution & Bylaws as well as our Doctrinal Positions document (available on our website under "Resources" and then "Forms & Documents")
2. Participate in the next Membership Interest Class
3. Complete and submit this Membership Application & Membership Covenant (please submit a separate application for each person applying for membership)
4. An elder will meet with you and discuss the application, our philosophy of ministry, and where you may wish to serve
5. Join us at our next quarterly Membership Meeting!
I hope this helps as you consider this significant step. Please don't hesitate to call if I or any of the elders can help you think it through further.
Only by His Grace,
Garrett Spitz
